Trash Radio Manila Episode 18 Part 3: And Now, A Word From Our Sponsor

We chose Tanduay to be our sponsor because I am personally on LSS mode. The video of Vivian Velez gyrating beside the image of a Tanduay bottle is playing like a loop in my mind. Vic Vargas' menacing stare is at once dusturbing and intriguing. What a cheeky yet memorable ad.

But then, Tanduay is paying us nothing, not even a cent. Which is perfectly fine with us. Anyway, we have work that we like and engage in activities that we like. Many times we take matters in our hands so that we can do something that we like when nobody seems to be willing to offer sponsorship, and most of the time we find ourselves more satisfied. And dependence, it seems, is one hard ailment to treat. (Ahoy! Listen up!)

In the playlist are three local hard-hitting hardcore specialists Throw, Tame The Tikbalang, and T.S.A., as well as two heavyweight acts Public Enemy and Body Count. I won't be saying much about these acts, since most of you are likely to be familiar with them. (But for readers who are not so familiar with the local acts, please hit the search button on this site, for I have written about them many times.) Instead, I want you to pay particular attention to T.S.A.'s cover of Urban Bandits' "Blood In Every Heart"... for a while I thought it was Slayer playing the first time I heard it (guffaws). Great cover, I must say! In fact the lyrics seem more intelligible than that of the original. Now how's that? ;)

...And A Blast From The Past

I have been swamped with errands lately, but I cannot let this one pass.

Some sectors may find it unusual for me to feature this Youtube clip (courtesy of Flagwavercharacter), and depending on your affiliation, you are entitled to your reaction (titillated, insulted, melancholic, aggro, whatever). I have this video uploaded in my Multiply site a long time ago simply because this is one of those commercials whose visuals and rather cheeky jingle stuck in my mind like epoxy. And, not so surprisingly, my Multiply site gets a substantial chunk of traffic because of this vid. As in, maaaaannny male users who don't even belong to my network chance upon my site, most likely because they were typing Vivian Velez on the search box. Cool, huh?

So there. Take a look at Vivian Velez and Vic Vargas, VV's both, in this very 70's Tanduay ad.

Bisikleta's Rude Maynila on Saturday

Just have to say that, instead of going to the Eraserheads reunion concert, why not head over to Ten 02 Bar this Saturday, August 30? Bisikleta Productions is now up and about with its first offering since a boy named Hilboy's return from a brief hiatus some few weeks ago. Watch The Marcos Cronies, Steady Movin' Beat (who were said to have done a superb set during last Friday's Truth Concert), Earthlings, Pulikats, Barrio Morning Glory, and Pink Cow and dance the night away with them. Listen to our friends The Soundblasters as they spin some of the good stuff they have been dishing out both on-air then and on their own site. I mean, 50 bucks and good times with friends in a cozy bar is far more attractive than a pricey ticket (yes, there is an PHP800 and PHP 1,300 ticket) to a supposedly mammoth reunion at the Bonifacio Global City (and no longer at the Araneta Coliseum).

So, see you guys this Saturday?

More On The Truth Fest

Most of you may still be at a loss as to what bands will be playing tomorrow at The Truth Fest. The truth of the matter is, no one's really sure what the final band line-up will be. But to many who will be in attendance tomorrow, would this really matter? There are many more activities such as inter-faith rituals, talks from resource speakers, food booths, and a session devoted to the litany of untruths. Read about it here.

We have been told, however, that some of the artists who be participating are The WUDS, Coffee Break Island, The Jerks, Datu's Tribe, Music Front, and Ms. Grace Nono. Do check out this event tomorrow. And before I forget, do keep in mind that there will be no alcoholic drinks during The Truth Fest. Be warned, you.

More About Raiyan Shafiq and From Us To You Benefit Show

It's one date down, two more gig dates to go for the benefit show From Us To You, the proceeds of which go to the cause of Raiyan Shafiq, the 3 year-old survivor of Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD). A pre-gig article appeared in the Straits Times (Singapore's national daily) last August 9, 2008, showing Raiyan and main organizer Mr. Izhar Zainal (of the band Norphrunt).

Again, if you guys will be in the lion city on any Sunday of this month, you may want to skip your Sentosa tour and help Raiyan by checking out the gigs at Music Garage, at 63B Queens St. Bugis Village, SG. Trash Radio Manila Episode 18 Part 2: Under The Sun

Aren't we all busy people? This episode's playlist may have been a tad delayed. In fact we promised to feature The Full Pledge Munkees, one of the bands who will be playing in From Us To You. The latter is a series of benefit shows for the young Raiyan Shafiq which I mentioned in my previous post. Do check it out, will you.

The playlist is a collection of songs from bands based in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines. We have heard about these bands in the past, but it is about time we play some songs from our Malaysian and Singaporean friends. I find it quite weird that most of us are actually unfamiliar with the music produced by our very neighbors, when they are as deserving of airplay as our Western counterparts.

Certainly, we all have varying convictions and predispositions. But music is testament that we can be one, and that we are one, under the sun.

So, for the playlist:

Out of the ashes of Snubnose rose Coffee Break Island sometime in the late 90s (or early 2000), if I recall right. I first saw them around 2002, and I was instantly mesmerized by the vocalist Paul Puti-an's raspy, alcohol and smoke-laden voice and the band's undeniable musicality and engaging stage presence. Years later, CBI is now known to the gig circuit as one of the most hardworking bands around, playing in various places in the metro and beyond. The song "Tubig ay Buhay" comes from the compilation of environmental songs called RapuRapu atbp., a project by the Center for Environmental Concerns-Philippines.

Next comes Gerhana Ska Cinta, another band that have been keeping Malaysia and Singapore on their (steel) toes for the past nine years. Their site, however, implies that they have recently disbanded (R.I.P. 1999-2008). Are they, really? The band appears on the list via "Time Will Tell".

The Full Pledge Munkees, too, have been playing their aggressive brand of ska for 9 years. Though they came up with an EP in 2000, it was only December of last year when they released their debut album, Pick It Up! The song "On The Line" is about the therapeutic effects of making music - go listen and be cured.

Another contemporary of the above-mentioned bands is Plague Of Happiness. These guys have appeared in numerous compilations (Before We Were Young, All Of The Ska Bands Are Splitting Up, Tribute To Acab Vol. 1) but it is only recently that they came up with their first album called Kawan. The song "Tiada Idea" comes from their debut; more tracks have been uploaded over at their MySpace site.

Fairy Goat Mudder may no longer be around, but we have included in the playlist a song called "Up In My Head". The said song appears in the compilation called Before We Were Young, which also included Plague Of Happiness, Scherzo, and Fags And Stoned.

From Us To You, Raiyan Shafiq

We are making this little announcement that we picked up from our network. If any one of you will be in Singapore this month, do check out this event.From Us To You is a series of benefit shows for three year-old Raiyan Shafiq, who is afflicted with Hand, Foot and Mouth disease (HFMD). The disease has hit the child's brain stem, that part of the brain that controls the body's vital functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure. Because of this, the child's breathing has to be maintained by a ventilator, and since digestion is also affected, he can only take milk through a tube coursed down to his stomach.

There are 3 dates set for the benefit gigs, and you can check out the participating bands on the poster provided in this post and at the side rail. Incidentally, Trash Radio Manila will be featuring The Full Pledge Munkees, one of the participating bands, in our upcoming (and much delayed) playlist which will feature some Malaysia-Singapore bands. Something to look forward to this week.

(By the way, T.S.A. is also participating, but we won't be featuring them muna, 'coz they're rock stars na, hahaha! Of course, we're kidding. By constantly representing the Philippines in the Singapore hardcore arena, T.S.A. is doing all of us a great service.)

MAIM's Less Talk, More Rock at Pasig

MAIM's CAMANAVA takeover gig is cancelled. Instead, an ad hoc hardcore gig is to take place in Pasig City on August 13. The following is the official word:

MAIM "Camanava TAKEOVER" show has been cancelled due to the local government's "takeover" on all liquor-selling establishments around Fatima College. Closure were issued on bars around the said school. We'd like to apologize to all the folks who are expecting us there. However, we will have an ad hoc hardcore show on AUGUST 13. Here are the details:

Indio I's Swan Song?

I should have been somewhere else last Saturday, July 26. Somewhere south, to be exact. I got it all planned. But I was invited to see this rather special gig in Xaymaca. Special because, rumours have been afloat that it was to be Indio I's last gig.Implication: no more regular Indio I gigs every Saturday at Xaymaca. And, if rumours were to be believed, we've just lost another extremely competent band.

Indio I played a rousing set after Peace Pipe. They played their originals ("Di Mo Lang Alam", "S On My Chest", "Earth To Man" etc.) and their favorite covers ("Zimbabwe", "King Without A Crown", "Don't Turn Around" etc.) to the delight of the crowd. No announcements were made to confirm the rumours ... but some people in the crowd were seen to be crying towards the end of the set.

And finally, after giving in to one more request from a heckler after the set, the band left the stage, in spite of unusually persistent clamours from the crowd to play more. Are they gone for good? If they do come back they'd better be back really soon. Because, in all honesty, these guys will be sorely missed.

Trash Radio Manila Episode 18 Part 1: The Theory of The Moebius

Think of all the known genres in the music world as being part of an enormous music loop, defined as a piece of audio track repeated continuously and seamlessly. Imagine, for example, how it is to smoothly segue a hip-hop song into a dancehall track, then to reggae then to punk and hardcore, to psychobilly, and back. It may be possible, taking each genre singly, but to envelop all in a single Moebius strip demands more than just knowledge, passion, and good intentions.

It requires one to be at the right spot in the time-space-auditory continuum. And if you think you are in this spot right now, then welcome, my friends, to Trash Radio Manila's newest segment.

Orbital looped the above quotation off Star Trek in their track "Time Becomes", which then blends into The Beatmasters' "Ska Train". The diminutive but no less intimidating Lady Sovereign comes next with her 2006 hit "Public Warning", followed by Madness, whose taste for ska has evolved to accommodate collaborations with Sway and Baby Blue in a song called "Sorry".

As for Track number 5. Have you ever heard of The Funky Phantom?



I know. Freddie McGregor's "This Carry Go Bring Come (Chatty Chatty Mouth)" features the lovable pink cat Snagglepuss, who sounds a lot like The Funky Phantom, and for a good reason: their voices were provided by the late Daws Butler. Listen and be transported to a time when Hanna-Barbera cartoons lorded it on television. Have a great week, guys, and make sure you stay in the loop with us here at Trash Radio Manila ... NOT! Hah! Think again. Snagglepuss here is actually MC Snagglepuss, aka Snagga Puss, presently known as Mr. Balance. Confused yet? Snagga, or Norman Suppria in real life, referred to in some articles as "The Proteus of Jamaican Music", has assumed various persona throughout his musical career, but has remained constant in his love for cartoons, imitating the likes of Woody Woodpecker and Popeye in his works.

Finally, finally. Claude M'Barali, more popularly known as MC Solaar, the French rapper with a fancy for lyricism and complex musical phrases, completes the list with the song "Bling Bling".

Fancy A Skankin' Date in San Fernando, Pampanga This Weekend?

Pampanga is home to great food: tocino, putong babi, buri, tamales, suam mais, and many many more. It is also home to The Marcos Cronies, who've been skankin' this part of Luzon for quite sometime. This weekend, you will have a chance to see them live alongside Shuffle Union, The Pulikats, Bunot All-Stars, Tata Moreng & The 1st Kara Band, and Wishstick in an event they call SKAFEST@GNK BAR on July 19, Saturday. GNK Bar, I presume, is situated along the McArthur Highway, San Fernando, Pampanga. (If you guys get lost though, you can always ask around: Nocaring GNK? Dacal a salamat! - or something like that ;) ) Party starts at 7pm, and PHP75 comes with a free drink...
